The Yellow-Footed Green Pigeon (Treron phoenicopterus)
The Yellow-Footed Green Pigeon (Treron phoenicopterus) is an arboreal bird about 33 cm long with a weight of 226-248 grams found in the Indian subcontinent, parts of south east Asia. Mostly moving amongst trees, it is rarely observed on ground where it may come to visit salt-licks. It is non migratory but may move in winters from higher latitudes to lower areas. An upper elevation limit of 2410 meters has been recorded. They may also move in response to availability of food and are social birds, foraging in flocks and feeding on mostly raw fruits or succulent fruits. They also help in the propagation of plant species by seed dispersal. Sexes are similar. Yellow footed green pigeons are monogamous, generally breeding from March to June. The pairing in this clip was observed in March at the Jim Corbett National Park, Ram Nagar, Uttarakhand, India. Nesting is on trees or sometimes on shrubs. Nest is a platform of twigs, grasses, leaves and feathers constructed by both the parents in about a week. The females may lay 02 eggs. According to the IUCN Red list, 2024 the yellow-footed green pigeon is classified as a species of least concern. The species is regarded as the State Bird of Maharashtra, India.
